29 Nov National Safe Driving Week
National Safe Driving Week will be held from December 1st to December 7th; the objective of which being to raise public awareness of the fact, among other things, that distracted driving represents a significant cause of death on the roads.
According to Transport Canada’s 2021 Canadian Motor Vehicle Traffic Collision Statistics – the most recent year for which data is available – there were 1,768 road fatalities in Canada, and of that number , it is estimated that around 20 p. 100 are partially or totally attributable to distraction. This calculates out to roughly 353 road fatalities caused by driver inattentiveness.
THE SOLUTIONS
- Stay focused on the road. This means put the phone away, avoid eating behind the wheel, and avoid difficult or distracting conversations.
- Seatbelts save lives. Always wear your seatbelt, and ensure all passengers do the same.
- Speed limits are designed to limit the impact in case of collision. It is important to respect them. Also, keep a reasonable following distance from the vehicle in front of you.
- Maintain your vehicle. Make sure your brakes, tires, lights, and signals are all in good working order
Remember that we are not built for a crash. So let’s be careful and vigilant on the roads.
